Farm to School Procurement

Umpqua Valley Farm to School is the Regional Procurement Coordinator for Oregon Farm to School and School Garden Network. We provide technical assistance to nutrition directors and staff, producers, and those involved in the Oregon Department of Education Farm to CNP Procurement program. Each month, we send an email about the Oregon Harvest of the Month item with availability from farms in our region. We also send periodic emails with availability of other products that farms have abundance of and would like to sell to schools. To be added to our Procurement list, send us an email.

Umpqua Valley Farm to School piloted a Plant a Row program with local farms in 2021 where schools partnered with local farms to plan ahead for planting and ordering. Planning is essential when working with local producers to ensure the quantities that schools need. Contact us to find producers to work with, and check out our video for tips!

Oregon Harvest for Schools Directory

The Oregon Harvest for Schools Directory is just one way to find producers who are ready to sell to schools. Visit the directory and search by topic. Douglas County has many producers, some who may not be in the directory yet. Please contact us if you’re interested in a specific product and need assistance finding it.

Oregon Harvest of the Month

Oregon Harvest of the Month is a statewide initiative highlighting a different Oregon-grown product each month. The Oregon Department of Education provides posters, newsletters, recipes, videos, and educational materials to help schools celebrate local food.

At Umpqua Valley Farm to School (UVF2S), we take Harvest of the Month a step further by connecting students directly to local farms and encouraging hands-on learning. We work with farmers to select seasonal products that schools can purchase using their procurement funds to feature in school meals.

To engage students and families, UVF2S invites students to create their own recipes at home using the featured Harvest of the Month ingredient. Students can submit their recipes for a chance to win a $20 gift certificate to Umpqua Valley Farmers’ Market, encouraging them to explore local food beyond the classroom.

By making local food fun, interactive, and accessible, UVF2S helps students build lifelong connections to healthy eating and regional agriculture. 🌱🥕
